I believe the Battle of Monte Cassino is important to the Allies's victory at the end of WWII. Without the Battle of Monte Cassino the Allies wouldn't have been able to completely break through the Gustav Line, the southern most line of German defenses, the Allies also wouldn't have been able to capture Rome which was occupied by the Germans until June 4, 1944. Without the Allies's victory at Monte Cassino the Italian Campaign would have failed.
The Gustav Line was Nazi Germany's southern most defense line that ran from the Garigliano River to the Mouth of the Sangro River on the Adriatic Sea. The Gustav line was heavily fortified with machine-gun pits, minefields and concrete bunkers. This line was centered around the Monte Cassino monastery. If the Allies never broke the Gustav Line, the Allies wouldn't have been able to capture Rome. If the Allies never were able to capture Rome, German forces in Italy wouldn't have surrendered on May 2, 1945. If the Allies failed at Monte Cassino, the Italian Campaign would have failed. The Italian Campaign was Allied operations around and in Italy from 1943 till the end of the war. The purpose was to take back Italy and defeat Italian Axis Power supporters. If the Italian Campaign failed, D-Day would have never been successful, this came to the Allied Powers realization in 1943 that the invasion of Normandy would be impossible. So after the recently won North African Campaign, the Allies decided to invade Southern Italy and make there way North to Rome. Without the Italian Campaign, the Axis Powers would have been too strong on D-Day, and had too many reinforcements making an Allied victory impossible.
So, without the Battle of Monte Cassino the Allies would have never seen the beginning of the end, and potentially, the Allies would have even lost World War II.
